Who’s your favourite?

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

When I was a young Smash Hits reader, girls always had a favourite band member - usually closely related to spunkyness and snogability, strangely enough.

This hasn’t changed much. I still almost always have a favourite band member (except for bands that clearly run as a fascist one man musical dictatorship like The Fall or Aztec Camera where there is no point in having favourites).

However, these days my choice of ‘favourite band member’ is more often based on the spurious concepts of ‘coolness’ and ‘likeability’ i.e. whether I’d like to have a drink with them down the pub and won’t have to suddenly remember an ‘important appointment’ five minutes into the conversation. I mean, no members of the Rollling Stones would pass on the snogability test these days.

So here are some of my favourite band members (in many cases based on a good 25 years of contemplation):

  • Favourite Beatle: George Harrison
  • Favourite Monkee: Mike Nesmith
  • Favourite Rose: John Squire
(he may be quiet allegedly, but he used to work on Danger Mouse!)
  • Favourite Floyd: Rick Wright
  • Favourite Duran: John Taylor
(ok, looks still win out here everytime)
  • Favourite Mac: Christine McVie
  • Favourite Bros: Craig (the other one)
  • Favourite Clash: Joe Strummer
  • Favourite Stone: Charlie Watts
  • Favourite Smith: Johnny Marr
  • Favourite Velvet: John Cale
  • Favourite Eagle: Don Henley
  • Favourite Blur: Graham Coxon
  • Favourite Ride: Andy Bell
  • Favourite Oasis: Noel Gallagher
(Andy Bell disqualified for squandering his career)

etc. etc. etc.
