Song of the Week: The Homecoming Queen’s got a Gun
The Homecoming Queen’s got a Gun
Julie Brown
One of the miracles of the modern age is being able to track down dimly remembered novelty tunes on Youtube – like this one by Julie Brown.
Written way back in the 80s when school shootings were merely fantasised about rather than actually undertaken, ’The Homecoming Queen’s got a Gun’ parodies the 80s Valley Girl life that I was only familiar with through trash teen novels and Frank Zappa songs. Still, the song and its accompanying video captured my imagination and despite not hearing it in years until this week, I’ve never forgotten winning couplets like:
God, my best friend’s on a shooting spree
Stop it, Debbie, you’re embarrassing me
and
Debbie’s really having a blast
She’s wasting half of the class
Ah, they don’t write parody songs like they used to. And what’s Weird Al Jankovic up to these days…

There’s a touch of Rocky Horror about it..a couple of vintage bits it’s unlikely I’d have heard again without Youtube’s online archives are…
Barnes and and Barnes Fish Heads – seen one Christmas around an aunt and uncle’s, who had put on the Old Grey Whistle Test to break my boredom. This piece of nuttery popped into play, and the entire room turned to me in silence with a nervous ‘please explain’ expression on their collective faces (it really kicks in at 2:19)

And this tune which was had regular airings on John Peel, There goes Concorde – The Native Hipsters

Two of my favourites there from Mondo!
Yours reminds me of that Alan Patridge episode where a Sinead O’ Connor type (Doon McKichan) came on his show, and horrified him by doing a song about a housewife going on a killing spree. Lovely.

I was thinking Rocky Horror too (are you a fan Cocktails?). Intro was a bit ‘Leader of the Pack’ too!

Thanks Mondo. I can’t believe I have got to this point in my life without hearing Fish Heads. And now I have, do I ever have to hear it again?! Actually it wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the creepy Chip & Dale voices.
I remember that episode of Alan Partridge ISBW. I didn’t particularly like it.
Similarly, I don’t really like Rocky Horror either Piley.
So now I come to think of it, I’m not sure exactly why I like ‘Homecoming Queen’s got a Gun’….!

Anne Nightingale used to play Fish Heads every now and then when she was on on a Sunday night after the top 40.
