Song of the Week: Keep me in Mind

The Bamboos
Keep me in Mind

This song doesn’t have an original bone in its body. From the two-note piano solo and classic horn runs to the strangely predictable melody and boring female backing vocals it is same old – same old nu-soul. In fact, I can’t think of anything remotely interesting to say about ‘Keep me in Mind’ other than that the label it’s on, Tru Thoughts, is a top Brighton-based indie who generally release way more interesting music.

But it’s great. Song of the week I say!

‘Keep me in Mind’, The Bamboos, from 4, Tru Thoughts, 2010

Wow, like you say, it sounds like a hundred things, but I can’t pinpoint any of them! Was there a bit of ‘How Long Has This Been Going ON?’ inthere somewhere? Nice summery feel to it though.

  2. Mondo Says:

It sounds like new Paul Weller or old Brand New Heavies. Breezy off-the-peg, summer pop either way.

  3. Five-Centres Says:

Can’t we have something Australian, Cocktails?

  4. Keith Says:

    I still enjoyed it though.

  5. Cocktails Says:

Piley and Mondo, I’m glad that we agree. It sounds like everything and nothing, but still manages to be good. And yes, I think there might be more than a touch of the Brand New Heavies in there. Not sure about ‘How Long’ though – do you mean the song by Ace Piley? Love that track, it’s a former song of the week from about 1 1/2 years ago I think.

F-C. No, we can’t. I don’t actually own much Australian music and you probably know more about it than I do.

As a concession though, you might like this track from the archive – http://cocktailsandrecords.net/blog/2008/08/04/song-of-the-week-a-matter-of-time/

Hello Keith! Good to see you!

  7. Five-Centres Says:

That’s everything i love about Aussie music in one go. I really like the sound of a rock mass.

That sounds just like something I would have danced to at the Wag Club in about 1985. Probably while surrounded by boys dressed like Joboxers.

  9. John Medd Says:

Phil Collins with a frock on

  10. Cocktails Says:

Bearing in mind that the Joboxers looked like prats and Phil Collins is rarely good, I assume that both of those comments are insults?!

Works for me. Not every decent tune is groundbreakingly original or indeed vice versa. I went through a period of caning their ‘Bring It Home’ (Alice Russell on guest vocals for that one) but that’s all I really know by them. Is there one standout album to take a punt on?

I really rate Tru Thoughts as well and a few of my favourite acts of recent years have come out of that label: Quantic, Alice Russell, Nostalgia 77. Because I’m a gent of advanced years I’m usually down the retro end of their pool but I like the way that they mix and match old and new styles and influences. Who do you like on the label?

Are you going to bother with Quantic & Combo Barbaro \The Bamboos @ the Barbican? I like the band and I like the venue but wasn’t convinced that the combination was going to work so I didn’t get tickets in the end.

Hello Spud, do you have some kind of mirror record collection to me?!

As if to prove the point, I don’t know much by The Bamboos either. I’ve liked some singles but not enough to consider buying an album. My Tru Thoughts favourites are Nostalgia 77 – I’ve been getting into their sessions with Keith and Julie Tippett recently – and I like a bit of Quantic too.

If you don’t have the 10th anniversary box set from last year you should definitely get yourself a copy. It has, as you say, a really good mix of old and new styles. Typically I can’t really remember the names of any of the new stuff.

Nope, not going to the Barbican gig. I have completely abandoned all live non-classical music of late and I really don’t think that the venue works for anything remotely danceable. However, I am off to the Barbican tomorrow night to see Wynton Marsalis and The Necks the week after…

Thanks for the tip off on the mixes. It’s just like listening to Giles Petersons show, ha!

Definitely fancy getting the Nostalgia 77 / Tippetts collaboration. The first time I heard Nostalgia 77 they actually reminded me of Keith Tippett’s old band Isipingo who I heard way back in …’77! It’s weird the way that N77 are so steeped in 60s and 70s Britjazz because they all looked like thirtysomethings when I saw them live.

But then it’s the same with Quantic’s thing for 60s Brazilian music, I suppose, or Alice Russell doing Rick James covers onstage. It’s that joining-the-dots attitude and interest in the backstory that I like. Gilles Peterson does that as well. (And, if you like him, you should check out Compost Soulsearching with Michael Rutten on Samurai FM. He’s kind of the German equivalent.)

Have fun at the Barbican gigs.

P.S. Stonephace! Nearly forget about them. They’re on Tru Thoughts too and they’re excellent.

  15. Cocktails Says:

Stonephace? That name rings a bell, they’re probably on one of the TT compils – I’ll have a look out for them. Will also check out Michael Rutten, although I am seriously in danger of being overwhelmed by music…
