Song of the Week: She’s so Fine

The Easybeats
She’s so Fine
Another delve in the mix tape box (sorry) came up with this early tune by The Easybeats.* I don’t think ‘She’s so Fine’ charted in the UK, but it was a bit of a ‘hits and memories’ radio perennial when I was growing up. Once you hear it you’ll know why – it’s 2 minutes 9 seconds of catchy pop perfection. And just listen to that scream five seconds in. What a way to open a song!
‘She’s so Fine’, The Easybeats, from Easy, 1965

* bunged on the end of a tape after ‘What I like about you’ by the Romantics, but never mind.

Sounds like a great lost Merseybeat track… Wikipedia tells us the singer is originally from Leeds and that the band were Australia’s first-ever international pop stars, long before Kylie was even thought of. One of them (it also says) went on to write ‘Fridays on my mind’ and another (or was it the same one) produced AC/DC. Who knew?

Ah yes, Jonathan, the Easybeats were indeed responsible for the fabulous ‘Friday on my Mind’. And, just as excitingly (!), their two main songwriters Vanda & Young also wrote ‘Love is in the Air’…

Do try to avoid the Gary Moore/Kool Moe D cover of Friday On My Mind (The Kool Rap Version).
Otherwise you have to love the Easybeats.

I’m not a big fan of Friday On My Mind (their only hit here) but I do like the rest. Can’t believe they never caught on. Isn’t Harry Vanda in there somewhere?
They feature large in the Long Way To The Top series.

A Gary Moore/Kool Moe D cover, SimonB – that sounds exactly like something I have to check out. What a combination!
Of course they feature largely in the Long Way to the Top series F-C. What else was there in the 60s other than Johnny Young and Normie Rowe (and they wrote their stuff for them anyway didn’t they?) And how can you not like Friday on my Mind?! That song is the story of my life.

got bits of everything in there hasn’t it? You can here a little Macca n Lennon, Pacepakers, Searchers etc etc…
I’m dead keen on the lead singer and the guitarist to the right of him… Lead singer looks like he’s just done himself an injury as is in mid “blooooooody hell, that hurts”… and could that guitarist get his axe any higher??!

I prefer Friday On My Mind but this is a winner too. Vanda and Young did produce AC/DC early on and Young is related to Malcolm and Angus of the great AC/DC .

Damn you Piley, your comment has forced me to look closely at that album cover and I’ve come to my own conclusions now, conclusions that I don’t want. Rather than pain, all I see on the lead singer’s posture is someone with a bowel complaint…
My God, Carl, you like a tune I’ve posted! I must be doing something wrong. ;)

i’m sticking with a nail in the boot….

What pranks were they up to? The guitarist looks like they’d superglued his instrument to his chin, and the singer is in urgent need of Prune Juice. But they made a good sound despite it all.
I’m quite fond of the Bowie cover of ‘Friday on my Mind’, though I appear to be quite alone in the world on that one.

Yes, ISBW you are. I’ve never been able to get into Pin-ups at all – it’s all just a bit… flat. Plus the cover is creepy.
