Song of the Week: Soul Sauce

Timebox

Timebox
Soul Sauce

Yes, after a period of laziness and well, just not listening to anything remotely suitable for the slot, Song of the Week is back.

Back with a 60s Southport take on a Latin jazz tune by Cal Tjader. If you listen to the music and ignore the photo above, you won’t be surprised to know that Timebox had a residency at the Whisky A Go-Go in 1965 and were an  trendy mod group for five seconds. They supported The Small Faces and even almost had a hit with their version of Beggin’.

All up, they didn’t have much success and other than a handful of Northern sound-a-like stompers and pretty psych rip-offs they er … weren’t all that great actually. But this is pretty catchy. Really.

‘Soul Sauce’, Timebox, 1967 from Beggin’ 1967-1969: the Sound of London’s Mod/Club Scene

Excellent xylophone work. And what hairstyles! The blond one in the middle looks like my old Head Girl.

A great track this one. I really liked it. This is the sort of thing that should be compulsory listening while at work.

Sounds a bit like the sort of thing they sometimes play on the Project Moonbase show. If you haven’t tuned in, I urge you to do so – I think you’ll like it. May I include a link? Hell, I’m going to anyway.

Great tune – I’ve got a few Timebox tunes in the vault. One called I Wish I Could Jerk Like My Uncle Cyril!! If only I’d found it earlier I’d have cracked it in last night’s podcast recording.

I’m working on a mix for Ally’s Dusty 7s sites – so may redeploy it there..

Very attractive ISBW, very attractive. At least she didn’t have a mo as well. Or maybe she did.

Dan, that show looks like just my cup of tea. I am definitely going to have a listen. Are you based in Leith then?!

I do believe, Mondo, that the delightfully titled I Wish I Could Jerk Like My Uncle Cyril is the B side to Soul Sauce. And it is pretty good (if not just for the title) so you’ll definitely have to find a space for it sometime somewhere. Looking forward to that Dusty7’s spot!

  5. Piley Says:

agree with ISBW, some cracking xylophone action there! Not enough xylophone in music these days… Does Patrick Moore still have a go?? He was a demon player.

This is a lovely track, every now and then it reminds me of a muzak’y version of Tequila by the Tramps!

    PS – Dan, great link!!

  6. 23 Daves Says:

Ha! I had my Timebox blog entry “queued” on Left and to the Back, and had no idea you were going to do “Soul Sauce”. There are any number of Timebox singles you could pick from this period, really… they were rather good.

  7. 23 Daves Says:

    Although I note you don’t agree…

  8. Dan Says:

No, not based in Leith (I’m in sunny Southend, along with Piley) so I have to tune in via the web. After 2 1/2 hours of Stuart Maconie’s Freakzone on a Sunday afternoon, a couple of hours of Project Moonbase is just what’s needed to refresh the ears. :o)

  9. Cocktails Says:

Piley, I think it is the xylophone that elevates Timebox to ’somewhere a bit less ordinary’. And there should be more of it around, yes. It’s even been abandoned by jazz in recent decades, although you still hear it a bit in classical music. Are you a fan of Project Moonbase too Piley?! They have a Southend fanbase!

Ha! Very nice co-incidence there 23Daves. I note though that you have chosen the two songs that I link to and mentioned the other (Beggin’) so really, that’s 4 good songs + Cyril, the B-side Mondo’s mentioned. Granted, thats a higher hit rate than loads of mid-60s groups of this ilk, but its hardly the Beatles! I think most of the rest of their output is rather uninspired. So much so, I when I was listening to it the other night I got so bored I had to turn it off.

  10. Piley Says:

Never heard of Project Moonbasr til I spotted Dans link here!! That fella doesn’t tell me anything!

‘A Southport take on Latin Jazz’. Well that is a sentence I don’t believe I have heard before. Having said that my Mother in Law was living in Southport in the 1960s and was (and remains) a big fan of Latin music. I’ll probably find she used to drink Gin and Tonics with Timebox down the Yacht Club of a Friday evening.

  12. Carl Says:

Did you know that some of the guys in Timebox went on to become Patto , a very good but strange progressive rock band. Ollie Halsall (guitar) was a superb musician . Sadly 2 members (Halsall and Mike Patto) are dead , one member who was seriously injured when thier van crashed has no memory of his time in the band at all. The other guy is ok but walks with a limp :-).

  13. Cocktails Says:

I have heard of Patto Carl, but not anything by them. And what with the patchiness of Timebox and my fear of things described as ’strange progressive rock’ I don’t know if I’ll be taking this knowledge any further!

Terrible about what happened to them though, especially losing your memory. That is pretty much losing most of your life.
