Song of the Week: Tiffany Glass

Orriel Smith. Oh boy.

Orriel Smith
Tiffany Glass

I strongly suspect that several regular readers will already own this piece of ‘fuzzy felt folk’, but it seems to fit the icy weather and the glacial mood that I am in.

And shock discovery for the day: did you know that Orriel Smith now uses her exquisite soprano to record albums of er, operatic chicken impersonations?

I love this world.

‘Tiffany Glass’, Orriel Smith from ‘Now we are Ten’, Trunk Records, 2006 but originally released as a single in 1968.

Needless to say I’m a fan of this and the whole Fuzzy Felt Folk album. It’s a classic. The sinister My Mother Said… is a particular favourite.

  2. Mondo Says:

It’s gorgeous – very winter/new year..I’ve seen Now We Are Ten come up via Amazon recommended but always thought it was some indie kid comp..

I got this over Christmas an absolute corker – could be your sort of thing.

Watch out for a proto Bowie tone track from it next week..

I don’t actually have the Fuzzy Felt Folk album. Looks like a purchase needs to be made.

I highly recommend the Now we are 10 sampler Mondo. There is some great (and lewd) stuff on there. Don’t suggest any more box sets for me though (no matter how good they look) – I’m drowning in music!!

  4. Piley Says:

what a whimsical and hypnotic little toon! Agree it has a Christmasy feel to it, yet without sounding remotely Christmasy! Weird… bit like Greg Lake’s song is both Festive and non-festive all at the same time.

I’m pleased that you like Tiffany Glass Piley, I find it quite entrancing and wintery. Although Greg Lake isn’t the first comparator I would have thought of! Have a listen to her chicken impersonations – they’ll put you in a different frame of mind altogether…

  7. Piley Says:

bad English on my part Cocktails… i meant that Grag Lake is one of those songs that has a festive kind of feel to it, yet is not really festive at all…. wasn’t comparing this song to that!!! Hope thats cleared that up… i DID listen to it, honest!!!

  8. Bltp Says:

blimey that’s fey it’s a sort of raggle taggle gypsy version of buttferflies by Dolly Parton. It sounds like the sort of ethereal refrain that’s used as haunting music in early 70’s english horror films. none of which is entirely bad not sure i could face an entire lp though.

  9. Hoops Hooley Says:

Mmm like it. Not heard of Orriel Smith before. Reminds me very much of Vashti Bunyan? (http://open.spotify.com/search/vashti+bunyan)

  10. Cocktails Says:

Don’t think she’s done much else Hoops, not that is available anyway (except the chicken opera record!)

I don’t know if I could do a whole album of it either, which is why I’ve generally avoided Vashti Bunyan! I think that the compil which this track was originally on – Fuzzy Felt Folk – is a lot more diverse than just ethereal and whimsical female vocals.
