Back in the sunshine

I don’t know if any of you have ever seen the Akira Kurasawa film Throne of Blood and its atmospheric translation of Macbeth into a samurai drama in the misty Japanese mountains, but the picture above is kind of reminiscent of it.
Sadly this is not from the film, but a snap I took a few days ago in the French Pyrenees. Still, walking through a cloud is a unique experience and when the rain actually stopped, it did bring out the lovely autumn colours.
And now I’m back with aching legs, saturated walking boots and a proven need to re-enrol in my French classes.
I’m off away again to Aberdeenshire for a few days next week, and yes, I will be taking my brolly and maybe even my boots if they ever dry out. Until then, I’ll be busy weaning myself off the five-course meals I’ve become accustomed to. Life’s tough, eh.

Erm…does that mean the drought’s over down there??
September 25th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Drought? What drought?! There was a huge cloud over most of southern France and northern Spain throughout virtually all of our stay. The locals were very apologetic though, constantly exclaiming that although this was MOST unusual, it was a nice change from the searing heat they were used to. So at least someone enjoyed the weather…

Actually I’ve never seen any Kurasawa – Aberdeen? Watch for those pesky midges on the east coast. Pack some Deet based repellent.

Mondo, you need to get yourself some Kurasawa. Throne of Blood is one of my very favourite films (mind you, I have been accused of having poncey taste). At the very least you should take a look at Seven Samurai. And Stray Dog and The Hidden Fortress are very good too.
Midges aren’t usually too bad this time of year – they prefer it in the West I find!

I second that! Kurosawa is the business. Though I too have had the Poncey Finger pointed at me more than once.
As for that totally unseasonable Pyrenean weather – what can I say? I’m amazed. And gutted for you! Can I offer a probably useless midge tip in reparation? Eat Marmite and they”ll apparently leave you alone. Apparently.

I’m pointing poncey fingers at both of you. Mondo and me are off to a Jean Claude Van Damme double feature. Then we’re going to smash things up with hammers.
Welcome back. I love Scotland, midges or no midges; sheep ticks or no sheep ticks.

I’m afraid Mr Suicide, that I cannot take the opinions of anyone who admits to seeing Superman III more than 10 times even remotely seriously. You will not be redeeming yourself with an apparent ‘love of Scotland’ either. I know that it’s all a cover for the fact that your favourite film ever is Romanian arthouse classic ‘Do Midges Dream of Marmite?”
And fortunately Mr C. is midge bait so I don’t have to touch the dreadful stuff.

Thanks folks, but they’re just holiday snaps.
And yes, FC, life is just one long holiday. You really should be grateful though because you’d have to put up with me all year round otherwise.

I need serious convincing that anything involving special boots constitutes a holiday. I doubt fields count either. In fact I’m discounting everything that doesn’t at least involve a paddle
Still if you enjoyed it that’s all that matters

Oh, you can have a paddle with special boots Ally. You just have to walk 8 miles to get there…
