Song of the Week: Jazz à Gogo

The lovely France Gall

France Gall
Jazz à Gogo

After too many days in internet hell, both at work and at home, I am giving in and leaving it all behind. Well, for a week or two anyway.

And what better way to mark an imminent trip to France than with a bit of 60s cool from France Gall. From her light skimming vocals to some seriously frantic skatting, this is the fab jazzy 60s pop you probably didn’t know she was capable of. Forget Eurovision and ‘Poupée de cire, poupée de son’, c’est du jazz à gogo!

Right, I’m off to Nikwax my walking boots. See you in a few weeks.

‘Jazz à Gogo’, France Gall, 1964

There’s a tip top vid of France doing Laisse Tomber Les Filles on Youtube

So where are you doing you wandering UK, Europe or is the clue in the tune?

  5. Cocktails Says:

    Merci, tout le monde.

The clue is in the tune Mondo. Sort of. We’re heading to a small village in the French Pyrenees, which I suspect will not be nearly as swinging as that Youtube clip (great stuff!). There will at least be good walking and excellent food. Been that way?

ISBW, yes, I am sure that the subjunctive will be getting a real workout…

    J’aime bien!

This set me off looking for a couple of France Gall tracks I used to like when I spent a year in Rouen as part of my French degree back in the (very) early 80s. See what you think:

    J’aime le fromage moi…

    Bonnes vacances!

Hope you have a super time, Cocktails.

‘On va danser ensemble, pour vous que ca balance’. I think Mademoiselle Galle might be treating us to a subjunctive right there, although I have to admit to never having cracked that tricky little blighter of a tense entirely, even during the course of a four year degree…

Lovely number though, tres cool. Hope you have a great holiday Cocktails…

  9. Keith Says:

Hey there. Great post. I hope you’ve been having a wonderful weekend. Take care. Cheers!

  10. Cocktails Says:

Two people with French degrees read this blog? Perhaps I am writing in the wrong language?! No, after my trip away, I’m confident that I’m not…

Liked the Elton John duet Hoops, I hadn’t heard that one before. I particularly like the fact that neither even bother attempting to sing in each other’s language – cultural co-operation of the first order!

  11. Cocktails Says:

Oh, apart from the choruses. And the verses… See what my language skills are like…
