Song of the Week: Ruler of my Heart
Irma Thomas
Ruler of my Heart
This week’s song is a classic tune from ‘Soul Queen of New Orleans’ Irma Thomas. I’m not generally a huge fan of the slow ballad, deep soul oeuvre, but I can play this track over and over again without ever getting sick of it.
‘Ruler of my Heart’ was written by songwriting /producing /pianist / everything else legend Allen Toussaint, apparently under the name Naomi Neville. Who knows what was going through his mind at the time, but thankfully it didn’t effect his songwriting ability.
‘Ruler of my Heart’, Irma Thomas, 1963

Oh that smoky voice – didn’t Nora Jones do a version – it’s almost everything Amy Winehouse wants to be
Like you I’m not generally a fan of the soupy ballad, but for some similar southern soul – check out Johnny Adams. What a voice..

If Nora Jones, did a version I haven’t heard it – and I don’t know if I particularly want to for that matter! I know Otis Redding did a version though – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdyecbJMLZ0
And Johnny Adams is pretty good too!
