Song of the Week: Double Life

Jerry Fuller
A Double Life
I’d like to dedicate this weeks somewhat early song of the week to myself – for I will be leading a double life over the next 9 days. You see, I am going away to Cornwall with my parents.
Putting aside the fact that I haven’t spent this much time on a ‘holiday’ with my parents for at least 10 years, I will in addition be struggling with my double ‘technology’ life. In short, I am addicted to email, to the internet, to this blog, to various podcasts and to my ipod. To say that my parents are not sympathetic to this condition is an understatement. It will be a week of trying to bury my withdrawal symptoms under a pile of cream teas and Sharp’s bitter rather than face their barrage of cynical jibes about me being a needy victim of fad technology. I know that I am not alone in this weakness so any sympathetic thoughts would be much appreciated. Just send them to: the woman without an ipod or 3G phone, Polperro, Cornwall.
But enough of me, listen to Jerry Fuller. I picked this Ace CD up on a whim and haven’t regretted it yet. He did rockabilly, he did soul, he did R&B, he did Byrds and Dylan rip-offs. He probably would have done email and the Mark Kermode/Simon Mayo film podcast if he could have.
‘Double Life’, Jerry Fuller, from A Double Life: The Challenge Recordings 1959 – 1966, Ace, 2008

I used to be like that about TV. Now I couldn’t care less if I never see it again. Holidays are meant to take you away from all this modern nonsense, Cocktails. So get with the Cornwall program and just relax.

Take a deep breath and a few days in you’ll be fine – it’s nice to get your head back and not feel permanently plugged in..
Whereabouts in Cornwall are you off to ? Holywell Bay used to be lovely, and we camped in Boscastle and Tintagel years ago, but the tent almost got blown off of a cliff..
I’m reading this at the mo’ some great, great pieces about Cornwall and Devon

Ooh, that’s ACE! You’re so good at finding this stuff!
Have a good chill in Cornwall, and remember, it’ll all still be here when you get back. Podcasts and emails in your inbox, blog archives bursting at the seams…what fun you’ll have catching up!

don’t listen to them sneak you phone with you I have folding keyboard for mine! I bet parents don’t like you questioning their fave technology (eg spoon rests and weird flowery things to protect work surfaces or jars of screws screwed under shelves or caddy’s for tv controllers) and when you can find out if the monkey sanctuary is open without driving halfway across cornwall then they’ll learn. But I should grin bear it, also we had some Dartmoor beer recently that was nice seemed to be based around big cats. Have a good time they mean well (usually)

oh dear… don’t let my recent post put you off… you’ll love the freedom, you wont give a second thought to your blog, email etc etc. you’ll come back a new person, refreshed, and with a ‘take it or leave it’ approach to those things….. can i uncross my fingers yet????!
Have fun!

Thanks everyone. I’m sure I’ll manage to cope without technology, although whether I’ll cope with my parents is another issue!
PM, John Betjman book looks great. Might have to add that to MY list. We’re staying in Polperro, between Fowey and Looe, but will no doubt be covering much more. The aim is to go to the Eden Project and um, eat lots of cream teas in small villages.
Will look out for the Dartmoor beer too BLTP.

My folks are on holiday somewhere in Cornwall just now. Lovely part of the world I’m told.
I’d need to smuggle an mp3 player, but beyond that, I rarely miss any of the techie things in life when I go away. have a good ‘un!

Cool tune. Have a great time. I went to the mountains a couple of summers ago for a week. There cell phones didn’t work. There was no tv or computer. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy myself or not, but I did. I didn’t miss any of this stuff at all.
