Song of the Week: If Looks Could Kill

If Looks Could Kill

Being a sad fan, of course I rushed out and bought the new Camera Obscura album, My Maudlin Career, this month. It’s very good, but so far nothing has leapt out and lodged itself in my head quite as much as this single from their last album.

So hit play, turn it up loud and pretend that Phil Spector and his weird hair aren’t languishing in a gaol somewhere, but hanging out in Glasgow with serious looking girls who wear hair slides.

‘If Looks Could Kill’, Camera Obscura, from Lets Get Out of This Country, Elefant, 2006

Get out of my head you sneak thief, I just got the CO lp too. I like french Navy of ther new one just for the line about spending a year in a dusty library. Not sure why I haven’t heard their early stuff so apart from the last lp what’s good I’m tempted by “LLoyd I’m ready to be heartbroken”.
ps. You can’t beat a hair slide IMO

Ah, such taste BLTP. ‘Lloyd I’m Ready to Be Heartbroken’ is the other ace single of the last LP, Lets Get Out of this Country – which I highly recommend. I’m not much of a fan though as I don’t REALLY know their earlier work. Underachievers Please Try Harder is good though. Get that and the last record.

Gorgeous (sounds like the sixties meets the eighties)- and what great voices
I think I’ve seen a vid’ for CO this week but can’t remember where..

That album going straight on the list..ta for the tip.

Great song. Great band. I only learnt this week that Lloyd, I’m Ready to Be Heartbroken is an answer song to Lloyd Cole’s Are you Ready To Be Heartbroken?

    Glad you like it chaps.

Be warned PM, that not all of their stuff is like that. It does have more of the touch of the indie-smidie about it.

And Nigel, yes there is nothing better (er, maybe) then the old riposte song. Camera Obscura’s Rabbie Burns tribute ‘I Love My Jean’ is good too if you haven’t heard it. BTW, I have given in to Spotify and have been enjoying your Disney comp!

Really liked the track you posted… very uplifting. Like PM says, there is a heavy 60’s feel to it, reminds me of lots of things but cant put my finger on any one thing… which i guess is a good sign in itself, as its obviously a slight nod to their influences rather than a big hefty steal. Good stuff!
