Song of the Week: Uprock

Rock Steady Crew
Uprock
On the weekend I met a friend at the lovely Skylon bar at the South Bank Centre for some divine, but ridiculously over-priced cocktails. Arriving early, I was fortunate enough to discover a b-boy/b-girl dance-off happening in the foyer. Brilliant. What better way to kick off an evening on the town than some breakdancing!
However, I was startled to discover that the yoof were breaking to Frankie Valli. Frankie Valli!!!* I remember when things were so much better, so much cooler, when groups like the Rock Steady Crew ruled the world.**
‘Uprock’ is their fabulous flop single, but if you want to see the hit and some mean b-boy action (and I know you do) check out Hey You.
‘Uprock’, Rock Steady Crew, 1984

*a remix admittedly, but still Frankie Valli!!!
**well, for one month in 1983 anyway.

Mr Maconi played the “hit” last night which had me “bopping” and “grindin’” round the flat, I’ll have a listen later.

Well, fancy that – I didn’t hear it, but it only goes to show the legacy of the Crew! I think that Uprock is way better personally but sadly it only got to no. 67 I think in the UK charts. I suspect it was a bigger hit in Australia – there is no other explanation as to why a 9 year old would have been into it.

That’s really cool. I hope you are doing well. Take care. Have a great weekend. Cheers!

Thanks Keith – you too. Don’t take up breakdancing or anything.

I bought that single (Hey You) when it came out in ‘83. It reminds me very much of sixth form school days. I’ve not heard it for ages.
