The simple things
‘It’s the simple things, the old familar things
that make you feel happy…’
This song featured in a number of 40s Disney cartoons (yes, those ones with nice tidy houses and big radios) and its ode to a simple, kind of old-fashioned happiness is the best way to describe how I felt when our new milk delivery arrived on Saturday morning.
I didn’t even know that milk deliveries still existed, let alone milk bottles, until a neighbour mentioned it a few weeks back. But now I’m in the know and despite never actually sighting the milkman in 6 years of living on this street, I’m seeing evidence of this secret milk society everywhere – I now notice the empties furtively appearing out the front of houses and spy people in dressing gowns nipping out to pick up their fresh deliveries in the mornings.
And now we’ve joined. And it’s ace. I tell you that there is no better way to start your day than finding a bottle of milk outside your front door, feeling the cold, hard glass against your fingers, hearing the satisfying low pop when you flip the lid off and pouring it over your cereal. It’s back exactly like it was when I was 8.
Yep, it’s the simple things.

Wow! That is so cool that there are places where you can still get that done. I always thought that sounded so awesome. I would love to be able to pick up my bottles of milk and my newspaper in the morning. That would be a great way to start off a day.

It is pretty cool and even better because I didn’t think that anyone did this any more, particularly not in glass bottles. It feels like another era!

You’ll have to search out milkbottle symphony by st etienne to groove to while muching your coco pops(give us a shout if you’ve not got it!). Have you bought any dirty nesquik to drink up the excess pintas, it’s slippery lactic slope you’re on!

Nesquik?! Filthy stuff. It’s Milo all the way in our house.
