Song of the Week: A Question of Trust

Their Hearts Were Full of Spring
A Question of Trust

Do you miss old school fey indie? Do you mourn the demise of McCarthy, miss the Go-Betweens and think fondly of Talulah Gosh? Are you exasperated with the low productivity rate of the Pastels and Belle & Sebastian? Then this is for you.

Their Hearts Were Full of Spring are a London band who’ve clearly listened to too much of all of the above. I love it.

There’s nothing wrong with the Shop Assistants BLTP…

Lovely song. Various elements of it put me in mind of The Smiths, The Auteurs, Camera Obscura, The Divine Comedy, Magnetic Fields, Broadcast………

Belle & Sebastien are an obvious reference point, but THWFOS sound much less painfully self aware and cool, which is a good thing.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled for their stuff.

Oh, and their name is utterly brilliant.

Cracking song. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for their stuff…

I just typed Their Hearts Were Full of Spring into YouTube and this is what I got, which I guess explains the name: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7Vy4eVYJQrs
Ladles of schmaltz but probably worth sticking with it. You can’t deny these blokes can sing. Even poor addled Brian makes a rare appearance…

Somehow I’m not suprised that either of you liked this track – it is very good isn’t it?! It references a lot of obvious material, but still somehow seems to stand on its own. And I’m similarly not suprised by the Beach Boys name reference.

What I am suprised by is how good the Beach Boys sound in this clip. Tight, tight, tight and quite touching in its own way. Even if its Ronald and Nancy Reagan whose hearts are full of spring…
