Song of the Week: Jack the Ripper
Link Wray and his Ray Men
Jack the Ripper
It’s cold and summer seems a long, long way away. But don’t worry, boys and girls, we can use our imaginations! Just stick on some surf music courtesy of Link Wray and you’re instantly hanging out on a sunny California beach in 1961 (if not a hot, crowded and dingy basement bar full of cool dudes wearing black leather jackets and curled lip sneers).
‘Jack the Ripper’, Link Wray and his Ray Men, 1961

That’s so up my street it’s almost blocking the road – cult films meet burlesque a go-go sounding..I’ve got a pair of shoes just like that, and he’s playing a Danelectro guitar – so am I in my new proflile pic
*goes cross eyed and faints*
PS would’ve chipped in earlier but Firefox wouldn’t play it – well worth the wait though…

That’s some response! I do like your turn of phrase.
I found this on an Ace compilation The Birth of Surf.

The rest of the CD is more conventionally surfy, like the Ventures, Dick Dale etc., but has some top sounds.
And don’t you think that any right thinking indie guitar band would kill of a guitar sound like Link Wrays?

I’ll have a nosey round for that album – have you checked out The Fabulous Wailers..for much more of the same..Wailing is a belter

It’s dead easy to get the same sound just pay around £150 for on of these
The offset ones at the bottom are best (I’ve got one in peach)

I haven’t heard of them PM, but will have a listen.
And as for the Danelectros I’m truly impressed by the range of colours available. When I meet the devil at the crossroads and obtain some semblance of musical talent I may well buy one.

Out of all my guitars (about 15 or 16) the Dano’s are easily the best value pound for pound – and look at this list of players they’ve got some real pedigree – Beck, Jimmy Page, Syd Barret

Very cool. Definitely puts me in the right mood. I wish I could head to the beach. I’m ready for warmer weather. It’s been so cold, windy & rainy here this week. I need a pick me up.
