Song of the Week: Showing Out
Mel & Kim
Showing Out
Somewhat less irritating than the Reynolds Sisters were Stock, Aitken and Waterman’s other sister act, Mel & Kim.
Their big hit ‘Respectable’ will always have a special place in my heart, not just because it’s a top song, but because I once found the princely sum of $5 shoved down the side of my seat in the cinema. This was a big deal for a perpetually skint 11 year old. Delighted, I rushed straight from the pictures to our local department store’s ‘Music Bar’ and splurged on the 7″ of ‘Repectable’. I can’t remember what the film was, but I still play the record.
But I digress. ‘Showing Out’, Mel & Kim’s first single, is just as good as ‘Respectable’ and as you’ll see from the clip they had the groovy hats and Top Shop chic sorted from the off. Get fresh at the weekend indeed!

‘Respectable’ is the one for me – it’s one of those perfect pop songs, so good that they’re shame free – see also anything by Betty Boo or everything on Kylie’s ‘Fever’

‘Respectable’ is indeed classic pop, Mr Mondo. But I’m afraid that I have too many ‘issues’ with the ’singing budgie’ to ever call entire album of hers perfect.
And you’re a strange one, Mr BLTP – a suspicious fondness for Mel & Kim but a sad disdain for Bon Jovi…

I’ve never even heard this song before, but I thought it was really cool. It’s a pretty catchy tune. Thanks for sharing it with us. Hope you had a nice weekend. Cheers!

It will forever remind me of dancing behind the counter at my holiday job in Sterling Coope ( formerly of The Trocadero, London)…and of the day I sold a pair of earrings to Samantha Fox. How much more 80s you want??
