Bijou

There has been a serious lack of cocktails around here lately; partly because I haven’t been partaking much and partly because I’ve just been a boring drinker. But tonight I indulged and made us Bijous.

This drink is great if you want a twist on the martini type theme. It’s got the classic gin and dry vermouth combo, but with the added delight of green Chartreuse and orange bitters.

The Bijou

- 3/4 oz dry vermouth
- 1/4 oz green Chartreuse
- 3/4 oz gin
- dash orange bitters

Stir over ice, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

OK, it looks a bit wee coloured, but it’s a fine drink to enjoy the last of the sunny days with.

Looks a good ‘un as long s you don’t say “just a bijou Bijou” too often. waht’s the main flavour of chartreus?

Sounds awesome. I need to make me one of those very soon.

BLTP, what kind of a dificult question is that?! Chartreuse tastes… Chartreuse-like… bitter, a bit herb-y. Distinct really, in the same way that Campari is distinct and unique. I can’t really describe it.

Keith, ’tis good – try one if you’re into cocktails. And you can’t ever go wrong with a classic martini either if you’re feeling cocktail-inclined.

I have been given a bottle of Chambord as a gift. Do you have any favourites which incorporate this berry-smelling brew? I trust your judgement.

Mmm, tough one ISBW. I’m not a big fan of sweet drinks and I’ve never sampled Chambord. I have looked through my cocktail recipe books and haven’t found any which specifically mention Chambord. However, I suspect that it could work like any cassis and mix well with champagne. Or perhaps with something like vermouth or dubonnet and soda water?

Actually, they have a rather tiresome website which you could look at if you’re really keen – http://www.chambordonline.com – with some recipes, most of which will entail buying a lot of other ingredients…

And that’s a rather peculiar choice of gift if you don’t mind me saying. I assume you’ve got a sweet tooth!

It IS an odd gift, isn’t it? Especially as it came from one of my gig-buddies who knows me well and knows my tooth is not sweet. Maybe he got a job-lot of it? It’s in a kitschy little bottle though, which looks like it could have been designed by Vivienne Westwood.

I’ll chuck it in with some dubonnet and see what happens. Thanks!
