Song of the Week: Way Back in the 1960s

The Incredible String Band
Way Back in the 1960s

This site is going relatively quiet for a week or two as I head up to sunny Scotland* for a week or so. To celebrate here’s a tune from Scotland’s (other) finest - The Incredible String Band. In this track, ‘Way Back in the 1960s’, the String Band veer away from their usual hippy folk nonsense and dip their toes into the worlds of ‘humour’ and ‘irony’. To mixed results.

‘Way Back in the 1960s’, The Incredible String Band from The 5000 Spirits or The Layers of the Onion, 1967

* If you say it often enough it might happen…

Not really the greatest song on this album, in fact not even a good song compared to the rest of the ISB “canon”. This album has a lot of good songs though. I’m rather fond of “First Girl I Loved”. The version from the Chelsea Sessions (predating this album by about 2 years) is a little bit more raw.

I hope you’ve got “The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter” or “Wee Tam and the Big Huge”, or I may be preaching to the converted.

Hello Rich, nice to see you here. No, this is definitely not the greatest song on the album at all I agree. I kind of chose it because it wasn’t ‘First Girl I Loved’ or ‘October Song’ or anything, you know… good. It’s quite different for them and I just find the attempt at humour delightfully cringeworthy. They really should have stuck to their normal fare!

    Isn’t their stuff lovely?
