Song of the Week: Primitive Painters
Felt and Elizabeth Fraser
Primitive Painters

Inspired by Five Centre’s recent post about duets, I was reminded of this fantastic number by Felt. The song’s probably not a duet in the traditional sense, but with Liz Fraser’s vocal contribution it may as well be, she’s so central to it.
I suspect that Liz Fraser’s appearance on ‘Primitive Painters’ came part and parcel with the fact that her Cocteau Twins partner Robin Guthrie was producing the rest of the album, Ignite the Seven Cannons. Felt were already capable of writing soaring, compelling indie classics which were stuffed to the gills with pretentious, impenetrable lyrics without needing any help from the Cocteau Twins - but hey, I’m not complaining.
‘Primitive Painters’ [5.49MB], Felt, Cherry Red Records, 1985

Bloody hell, BLTP, you’re right! The fussy, delicate Lawrence has clearly been inspired by Bob Seger. Oooh, that’s his indie cred in tatters now.

Yes, I’d forgotten about Denim. I think on Back In Denim there was a song called MOR, alongside another tribute to the Osmonds… Still, Bob Seger!

Takes me back. It sent me ferreting round the flat to look for my old tape of this album. Alas no luck. Can you get Felt on iTunes? I hope not…

RE - thanks!
Hoops - You can definitely get this track on itunes because that’s where this is from (I wanted a copy a while back and I’m too lazy to manually copy all of my vinyl to MP3). Only got this track though, so don’t know if the rest is there.
Just looked and yes, selections from most of their major LPs are there. Suprisingly really!

I’ve only just been able to get this to load - but well worth the wait. I love the way it just goes round in a jingle jangle loop - he sounds like Jim Kerr, and her yelps add a magical touch.

I’m glad you like it PM, but Lawrence does not sound like Jim Kerr! Jim Kerr!!!!
Well, maybe just a little bit…

Cor, haven’t heard this in YEARS! I get the Jim Kerr reference too (but I can remember Simple Minds before they were dreadful, so it’s not always a bad association in my head).
Off to iTunes again…
