Song of the Week: Divine
Sébastien Tellier
Divine

The Eurovision Song Contest is coming up soon ( 24 May to be precise). To celebrate such an auspicious event, this weeks song, ‘Divine’ by Sébastien Tellier, doubles as the 2008 entry from France.
To say that I am shocked by this offering is an understatement. ‘Divine’ is brilliantly different – melodic (with a hint of Beach Boys harmony), well produced (by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo from Daft Punk), non-cheesy and sung in English by someone with musical credibility. And it is not a power ballad or a joke entry. Regular viewers of Eurovision will understand what a courageous move this is for France.
Obviously it won’t win. France, like the UK and Germany, will never win Eurovision again until we set up a voting block to rival the Scandinavians and Eastern European countries. But respect to the French for making an effort in the meantime.

That. Is. Perfection. The production is certainly very ‘Love You’ era Beach Boys and the tempo reminds me of Heroes & Villains. Sometimes a truly brilliant song can just about turn the competition on it’s ear, but this is just too good to stand a chance.
I say Croatia to win with an Oompah medley of Cliff Richard hits played backwards. Or something.

It’s ace isn’t it? I can’t wait to see him on Eurovision too – Sebastien Tellier looks like his album covers: a tasteless 70s slimebucket!

Just had a listen to sebastien tellier it’s not too shabby, as you say it won’t win. Sadly if Uk France or germany don’t get some votes soon 0ur/their tv companies will stop paying for the whole shebang and it will fold.

Ill Man – Yes it is ;)
BLTP – Yes, it would be a shame not to have Eurovision to look forward to every year wouldn’t it…
