Election time again

It’s the London Mayoral elections tomorrow. As usual I don’t know who to vote for. Of course it’s easy to decide who not to vote for. That would be pretty much everyone running.

But still, I decided to be responsible and consult my London Elects booklet, kindly provided by one Anthony Mayer, the Greater London Returning Officer, to find out just what my options were beyond the usual suspects.

And what an education it’s been. I’ve learnt that:

  1. ‘The Christian Choice’ want to ‘end the (alleged) corruption at City Hall’. Yes, stop that ‘well-it-probably-exists but then-again-it-might-not and we-don’t-want-to-face-a -law-suit-anyway’ corruption.
  2. If you’re Irish you should vote British National Party (BNP) because they ‘are the only party that care about the indigenous people of these islands. Our jobs are under threat from economic migrants and only the BNP will protect our interests’. So, I guess it’s a bad thing that the American and Australian public didn’t vote extreme right in the 19th/early 20th centuries and kick all those bludging Irish economic migrants out?
  3. The English Democrats seriously believe that a vote for them will ‘save London from Labour’s tartan taxes’ because ‘London’s money makes Scotland’s world go round.’
  4. UKIP (UK Independence Party)’s main platform is still ‘a vote to say no to the Lisbon Treaty, European Constitution, European Union, mass immigration’ etc. etc. All of which I somehow suspect that the post of London Mayor has absolutely no power over.
  5. The Left List doesn’t think that Londoners should have to subsidise the Olympics. Good luck there folks.

So it’s back to the major parties then… Sigh.

  1. BLTP Says:

I started wrting a post about this but couldn’t come to a decision.
Boris is posh toff who will f**k us over, Ken seems to have given up, paddick seems rude and aloof and he’s parties policies have been stolen by the other 2.
So how about first Greens second Ken.
We should all vote we don’t want the BNP getting in.
    But it’s not straight forward.

  2. Cocktails Says:

Oh, I am definitely voting. Anything, anything, to stop Boris. But I’m tired of voting ’strategically’ to keep the Torys out. Not sure about the Greens. Although their policies are ok, I used to work with one of their ‘keen’ party members who was such a fruit-loop I haven’t been able to take them seriously since.

  3. Hoops Hooley Says:

I go along with BLTP. Greens first Ken second.

Although no way are the Green Party ever going to win power, you can safely vote for them for exactly that reason. No they won’t have a clue what to do about the economy but it doesn’t matter because they’ll never have to deal with it. At the same time green issues get put on the agenda (I think the election for London Assembly member in particular can actually make a difference here) and, as with Ken, there’s a chance that some housing will be built in London which is within the financial reach of those of us on less than £100,000 a year.

By the way check out the hugely biased anti-Boris rant in today’s Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/may/01/boris.livingstone.

    Power to the people!

  4. Cocktails Says:

Well, the deed is done and as usual I managed to avoid directly voting Labour - so I can kind of live with myself. I am intrigued to see how the Greens will do though since so many people are coming out as supporters.

Hoops - that Guardian article doesn’t hold back does it?! Pity its not in the Mail though…

  5. ill man Says:

I like Boris, the floppy fat fop. I have little knowledge of his political agenda, though I suspect it may involve compulsory elephant traps on all public roads.

I’d vote KL, just for the sheer visceral thrill of it. He annoys too many arseholes not to vote for him.

Not sound reasoning, but then, that’s not exactly my strong point……..

  6. Cocktails Says:

Ill Man - I like Boris too. As an ‘Have I Got News for You?’ host, not as mayor. Looks like we’ve got him now though…
