Fluffy duck
Q. What could be better than a blue drink?
A. Why, a yellow one of course.
This week I have discovered the joys of Advocaat, the vile looking liqueur made with brandy, sugar, egg yolks and more sugar. Generally a fan of short crisp cocktails and bitter (i.e. drinks which actually taste of alcohol), I have been avoiding Advocaat for years – the association with tacky sweet drinks and giggling grandmas was just too strong.
But something posessed me in the supermarket last weekend. Innocently wandering through the booze aisle, I found myself strangely drawn to the yellow bottle on the top shelf and before I knew it, I was furtively smuggling it into the trolley. As I explained/justifed to the Significant Other after, you can never have too much alcohol in the house and isn’t it good to push the boundaries and try something new…?
And it tastes great!
I recommend trying the Fluffy Duck (as modelled in our loungeroom to the right):
- 1.5 oz Barcardi rum
- 1.5 oz Advocaat
- fresh cream
- lemonade
Bung it all into a glass and stir.
It’s sweet but it’s refreshing, a nice Easter drink…

Hmmmmmm,
alcohol and cream and eggs. I tried a snow ball at Christmas in my role as santa’s barman and although I could see the point, I am not going back anytime soon for more. I’m afraid I’m “bitter and twisted” when it come to cocktails, I wonder what would be in that one?

I think I’ll pass on that one. Sadly, having no style at all, I prefer beer.

I have to confess that after consuming that rather large Fluffy Duck in the photo I think I’ve had enough myself for a while.
BLTP, for a ‘bitter and twisted’ person such as yourself (and believe me, I can relate) I recommend Campari, particularly in the form of the Negroni (campari, gin + vermouth). One of these will take the edge off everything – bad reality TV, incompetent local authorities, Heather Mills McCartney etc. etc.
For you Ill Man, I believe that you can be stylish with beer. Just avoid drinking Fosters!

I’m all for a drop of Advocaat (I’m all for a drop of most things really). One of the best cocktails I ever had was a Flying Cow, but have never seen one anywhere since.
As for beer I’m on a real Kasteel Cru buzz at the mo’ it’s made with Champagne yeast and is all the better for it – this isn’t suggestion either as everyone I’ve passed a bottle to – without mentioning the Champagne thing, always says how good it and looks straight at the label (always a good sign).

I’m all ready a signed up campari fan but have never had negroni even though I’m sure I’ve seen them in thrillers etc.
I concur on Kasteel Cru front excellent beer for a spring evening. You could try a Deus if you feeling flush. Has anyone been to Rake just down from Borough Market it’s great for exotic beer (no Fosters luckily)

Planet Mondo, if this is the Flying Cow – http://www.barnonedrinks.com/drinks/f/flying-cow-6222.html – then it looks positively lethal.
I do like a good Belgian beer and I’m sure I’ve sampled the Kasteel Cru at the Dovetail http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/29/2904/Dovetail/Clerkenwell – any place that has a beer menu is fine with me.
Must go down to Borough Market actually. It is one of the few places in the UK which sells Coopers, a very fine Australian pale ale which I am fond of… Haven’t ever been to the Rake though. Any good?

That sounds just like it – no wonder the girl I was with at the time, after knocking them back in the cocktail bar at Camden Palace was sick and had to be helped up by Steve Strange – how 80s is that?

PM, I love the Trappist brews, though some of the strong ones are a bit much. Anything over 9% is a walk on the wild side………..
