An emotional response to 6Music
Not wanting to offend either female or male readers, I hope that I have got the balance of the previous post about Jacqueline Taieb right – you know, some emotion, not too many facts…
According today’s Guardian, head of radio station 6Music, Lesley Douglas, says that recent changes to the line-up at the station are to attract more female listeners. They are doing this by addressing the way 6Music DJs talk about music:
‘Douglas added that women were more “emotional” about music, while men tended to be interested in its “intellectual” side…”the music, the tracks, where albums have been made, that sort of thing.”
“We want to broaden it out – there is absolutely no reason why women shouldn’t love 6Music as much as men love 6Music.”
Great. I am sick of of being made to feel like some kind of freak female simply because I like DJs who know what they are talking about.
I don’t want an ‘emotional response’ to the music from the DJ, I can supply this myself. Additional ‘intellectual’ information about the music is the only real reason to listen to 6Music, otherwise I might as well just play my own records all the time. Surely, I can’t be alone in thinking this?

Whoops that’ll get the listeners in.
It’s patronizing all round, implying that male listeners are Vulcans, and girls get giddy about the detail. I would imagine anyone choosing to tune in to 6 music shares a simlar musical demographic regardless of gender, and will be listening primarily because of the music.

Exactly. You’d think that the kind of people who listen to 6Music are the kind of people who’d want to find out more about it. And what is an ‘emotional’ DJ anyway? Jamie bloody Theakston?

Emotional DJ? I want the Moody DJ! Focus group bollocks. They can’t stop themselves, can they? Target audiences, will it play to group X or group Y? or they wet themselves about gender differences. These people should be taken out and forced to listen to DJ Otzi CD’s. Let’s hear them mither on about such nonsense after ten solid hours of “Hey Baby!! (I Wanna Know……)
