Phil Oakey hair

I found myself watching the final episode of Pop Britannia the other night on BBC4, the three part series about the history of British pop music. I don’t know why I watch these things. 25 years of slavishly reading the music press means that most general music programmes never tell me anything I don’t already know, and all I can see is what they left out.

Phil Oakey/meWhat I got out of this programme however was the disturbing fact that my hair looks exactly like Phil Oakey’s from Human League circa. 1983. Yes, I have a wedge cut, but thankfully it is not as dodgy as Phil’s infamous really short one side/ really long the other early 80s style.

Still, I really don’t know if this is a good or bad sign…

It’s a good sign. Wedge/bob type cuts seem to be timelessy trendy.
Phil O’s was one of the last truly great Rock nd Roll (if the H.League were ever really R n R) haircuts. And they seemed to go off the boil once he’d had the chop.

Thanks for that vote of confidence, although I’m not sure about being trendy! But is this the starting of a new theory on the correlation between hair and musical impact/talent.

David Bowie everchanging 70s hair = brilliant musical genius of the 70s.
Cliff Richard with sameold-sameold barnet for 5 decades = handful of great singles, load of unforgiveable twaddle.

Although the legendary New Order (despite naff True Faith video!) did have terribly ordinary hair.

Mmm, not sure where I’m going with this…
